Sitting with support. Check.

Does not thrust tongue out when an object is put in mouth. Check.

Stares at food with a reverence and curiosity reserved for REALLY cool things. Check.

Solid food, here we come! We have officially started trying out some solid food. Nadia loves sweet potatoes, squash, peaches, carrots. Nadia hates pears, rice cereal, and sometimes carrots. Life’s an adventure, and we’re taking it head on! Nadia gets to have adventures with food; David and I get to have adventures with the stinkier, solider surprises that the new foods create in her diaper. Here are some photos of her very first experience with eating from a spoon. I have my dear husband to thank for half of these.

P.S. It’s not quite midnight, so it’s still Thursday!

Please ignore the bad hair. It’s in recovery mode currently after the post-baby balding.

Daddy’s turn to feed her. It’s always good to start with a kiss. I think he just tries to butter her up so that he’s her favorite.

She has such a martyred look on her face.

It’s a good idea to end with a kiss to. I think that’s a good way to do anything.

It’s summer – take your kids to the park for some sunshine and portraits benefitting a great cause! We will be at Greenlake Park near the playground on August 18 & 19 doing 25 minute sessions for $49 (we think it’s a good deal). $5 of every session is donated to Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep, a non profit organization that offers infant bereavement photography. Recently having had babies ourselves, we aren’t quite emotionally ready to participate as photographers, but we still want to give to their cause, and what organization couldn’t use a little extra cash? Little Justin is the teensiest little baby I’ve seen. He made his appearance into the Harris home a bit early but warmly welcomed by all. Thanks, Justing for letting us hang out with you for a little while!

Super Oatmeal for the Supermom

Right after I had Nadia, my sister came over and made me a big pot of what I have come to call Super Oatmeal. Between lack of sleep, raging hormones and burning up a bunch of calories by running your own internal dairy, the new mom gets very hungry! This oatmeal is easy to make ahead of time in a big pot then just microwave each morning. It packs enough protein, carbs, fiber, iron and vitamins to keep you going no matter how many times you got up to spend some time with your very awake baby in the middle of the night. Even if you’re not a mom and you get tons of sleep, you should make it anyway. It’s heearty and healthy and yummy – where could you go wrong?

3 cups steel cut oats

6 cups water

an apple, cut into small pieces (1/2 bite size)

1/2 cup raw almonds, coarsley chopped

1 cup shredded carrots (I use a food processor)

1/4 cup raisins, currants, or golden raisins

1 tablespoon cinnamon

1 teaspoon nutmeg

1/2 teaspoon cloves

1/2 teaspoon allspice

Put oats and water in a large saucepan with a pinch of salt. Bring to boil. After 10 minutes, add the rest of the ingredients. Boil for about 10 more minutes. Serve with a bit of milk and some brown sugar if you’d like. Enjoy!

Sitting Up and Other Grown-up Pursuits

Nadia is growing like a weed. While I can’t wait for the next big thing with her, I also can’t stand to see each day go by. I don’t want to miss the here and now with my sweet little girl. Right now, we are practicing our sitting skills with the Bumbo chair! Look at that big kid!

Nadia is just learning to hang on to things, so when she has no toy, she just hangs on to her own hands. I love it!

Because they don’t come any cuter.

Once you’ve seen these you may just feel compelled to break into song. The lyrics will go something like this: “Isn’t she lovely, isn’t she wonderful, isn’t she precious…” you can take it from there. A big shout out to Stevie Wonder for those inspiring words to properly express the happiness of heart when you see a sweet baby face. But really, I’m pretty sure there are babies out their with baby envy over how incredibly cute Nadia wears nothing at all.

Shauna & Raphael: Baby Bump

The door opens wide. Raphael grins at me, welcoming me into his home. The beat of the music permeates the house. I set down my bag. He sets down a glass of water for me, complete with a colorful bendy straw. He calls me “sister” and tells me to make myself comfortable. I would have just settled down into their very cozy couch, but there were photos to be taken. Down came his beautiful wife, Shauna, hair all curled and belly all round with baby Justin growing inside. There truly is no place like the Harris home where everyone feels welcome and the atmosphere is always on the edge of being a party. Thank you, Shauna and Raphael, for welcoming us into your lives once again. We love watching your family grow!

Addilyn: Beautiful & Perfect

I have been trying for weeks, seven to be exact, to find the words to describe adequately the wonder and humility that accompany witnessing a baby being born. I don’t know how those delivery nurses do it day in and out. I would be a puddle. It is so incredible to see the first moments of a new life. Experience the love of new parents and realize that babies in the midst of their fragility are very hardy little people. Really. Upon entry into this new, bright, arm flailing world they are poked, prodded, measured and scrubbed. Like I said, super hardy. Thank you Juliana & Tyler for letting me glimpse another part of Your Story. A splendid tale it is turning out to be.

Nadia Jane: Bathtime Fun

I’m having a love affair with sleep. Nadia has resumed her 8 hour night, for which I am eternally grateful. I like to think that the reason for her long snoozes is her super-nice mom who puts together the best wind down routine for her every night. Ok, so not every night – there are the nights where she goes right to bed in her spit upon onesie and slightly wet diaper. Ok, fine. Her more than slightly wet diaper. Like I said, I’m in love with sleep. Anyhoo – the night time routine involves one of her favorite things – bath time. We dim the lights, have a late night snack, take a warm bath with Johnson & Johnson Bedtime Bath (get it – it smells like heaven), then we sit in front of the space heater for a little baby massage, a clean diaper and some cozy jammies. Finish it off with a swaddle, a kiss, and a pacifier and we are all set for sleeping!

Kosta & Cheryl: Baby makes three

I have a new favorite thing. I’ve known it for some time now and when I spend time thinking about it, I smile and my heart grows three sizes. At least that’s how it feels. I am blessed to enjoy a job in which my clients become friends. Friends that I have the enormous pleasure of sharing the BIG life moments with celebrating, photographing and helping to make these momentous spots in life something beautiful and easy to look back on and remember the gladness of heart. Seriously, that is pretty incredible and I am humbled yet again at such an honor. We celebrated Kosta & Cheryl’s fabulous Greek wedding last summer and now we are embarking with them on the good ship parenthood. As you can clearly see, Cheryl is a master nursery decorator and has created a little piece of perfect for their new baby girl. Cheryl & Kosta, I could not be happier for the both of you and am thrilled to see you as parents and meet the wonder that will be a mix of the two of you. I know I’m a little ahead of myself, but those are going to be some hilarious parent-teacher conferences.
