Sundquist Thursday: Snow Day

Now that we are all so sick of snow that we don’t want to see another flake until next year, I thought I’d post some snow day photos. Unfortunately, I have very few photos of happy children running through the fluffy white. Snow days with a toddler and an infant go like this – spend 3o minutes getting everyone dressed, taking a five minute break in the middle to convince them that they still want to go outside. Play outside for ten minutes. The baby starts crying from being cold, and the toddler, despite your pockets full of dry and warm gloves to hand out, has run out of patience with cold and wet fingers and wants to go inside. Then, you spend 30 minutes undressing everyone. I’ve determined that the required preparation time is definitely not worth the short period of fun.

This is just a brief introduction to my cousin’s sweet new baby. We’ll do a full shoot next week, but she is just too precious not to share. Best part? This first picture was actually taken by Addison. The only way I could convince Addison we weren’t going to touch the brand new 3 day old baby was to give her a camera with an 85mm lens and let her take pictures with mom. I love to see her view of the world. Welcome to the family Baby Clara.

52 Week: Week 3

Theme: White Space

Loved this idea. It is fun to look be looking at scenarios and deciding what would be best framed with negative space. It’s tricky to make it look intentional and just not badly composed. Since we had pretty much a week of epic sledding, uninterrupted family time and unlimited cocoa my options were less than limitless. After six days of being house bound (steep hills have kept our cars trapped and our travel non-existent), we are pretty much ready for a field trip anywhere. Actually we had a great week together and I am absolutely certain that I will look back on this snowed in time as a super special gift wrapped up in white.

Now, let the adventure continue.

Hopefully we won’t be needing to bring out the snow gear again til next year, but we sure were glad to have it ready and raring to go!

Family Time: Lake Ki

I have literally known this family since I was 13. I still remember seeing Carrie walk into Mrs. Gann’s homeroom class, the new transfer to our school, and just knowing we would be friends. Having never really struggled with shyness I invited her to sit next to me and the rest is pretty much history. A terrific history of a genuine, uncomplicated friendship that makes my heart grow two sizes. A recent move over the mountains has added a little glitch to our weekly visits, but really if your friendship can survive junior high, it can make it through anything.

Sundquist Thursday: Seeley’s First Month

So rewind from last week’s photos of Seeley. I did manage to document a few snippets of his first month, but I must beg you to look at these images knowing the following – I was suffering from the bleary-eyed, zombie brained fog that comes with the regimen of no sleep and early nursing. I usually didn’t have an opportunity to photograph Thing 2 until Thing 1 was in bed which equals dark and grainy photos, but let’s call them “photojournalistic” and “emotional” and “inspired by 19th century realist painting” rather than dark and grainy.

Baby plans are so incredibly fun for a multitude of reasons. The best and most delightful is watching this tiny infant turn rather swiftly into their own little person with personality, character and a whole lot of love. Laugh, fly, dream, imagine but first you’ll have to crawl, walk and run. I can’t wait for the 6 month stop on Baby Lucy’s first year!

Lewis Family Photos: Snohomish

Family photos always hold so much mystery. The mystery lies in the many unknowns that are guidable, but pretty much uncontrollable. And they are usually under the age of 6. Having been the parent in such a scenario I am fully aware of the panic, frustration and anxiety that leads very quickly and unfortunately to crazy angry mom. Never a proud moment for me. The true miracle is that when photographing other families I enjoy and revel in the antics of children. Let kids be kids and I’ll chase them around, crawl on the ground and pretty much have a wonderful time while capturing their smiles, games and hopefully a little piece of who they are right now. I hope to put that nugget of wisdom in my pocket and pull it out when I’m trying to get updated photos of my kids. Here’s to keeping crazy angry mom under wraps.

Thank you Lewis family for enjoying a pretty much perfect fall day in downtown Snohomish. The pleasure was mine and I look forward to seeing your family again soon!

LIttle A had her own idea of what we should be doing for photos. These next two are probably my favorites. I know they are not anywhere near the ‘perfect’ family portrait but you can’t tell me they are telling a much more real life, detailed story. The age of independence, fun & play does not want to sit still for pictures. They want to fly, run or just explore where the path takes them. Seriously, the look on Dad’s face is priceless. The beautiful imperfect moments make me happy.

Who doesn’t like to throw leaves? I’m just jealous I can’t throw and shoot.

(The dogs will be our little secret.)

Bowie Tuesday: Pumpkin patch #1

Let the pumpkin farm adventuring begin! This October has been had a sad slow start to the exploration of pumpkin farms. The weather has been wonderful but the calendar has been full. It’s already the 18th and we’ve only been to two, which feels way behind schedule. There are just so many fun farms to tromp around feeling the fall. We made a quick stop at a small farm near my mom’s house the other day. A game of hide & seek in the corn maze and a search for the craziest pumpkin made for mission complete.

Self timer lessons learned: Black & white can’t fix every photo, hand held is not my best angle, Landon clearly knows when I can’t see him, Addison is confused by what’s going on. All the bad doesn’t make the good any less of a keeper.

Ethan & Cynthia + Baby: Sneak peek

Since I know Cynthia is enjoying her baby shower today I thought I would give her a little sneak peek at her maternity shoot yesterday. More to come, but a small sampling is my gift as you celebrate the coming of your sweet baby boy. I had such a wonderfully fun time with the both of you and can hardly wait to meet you little man!

How lucky is this baby? Two parents who are already loving on him like crazy and giving him the gift of music. I could have sat and watched this family moment all day. Absolutely beautiful.

Bowie Tuesday: Mud Run

“Do something everyday that scares you.” Not a bad motto to live by. I can’t say that I am successful at this goal every single day, but lately I’ve been doing my best to up the numbers. This past weekend I ran in the Hell Run with a group of a fellow adventurers. My mom, uncle, brother and the best of friends. 3.25 miles with 12 obstacle courses thrown in the mix. It could definitely make the short list as one of the most fun things I’ll do all year. After all, when presented with the opportunity to low crawl through mud under barbed wire, climb over walls, and leap fire all while wearing a super hero cape, you can be confidant that by days end you’ll be walking a little taller and not quite doubting your ability to leap buildings in a single bound.

Next year I really I am determined to have a GoPro camera so we can capture the race in it’s entirety. It is just too fun not to share.
