Introducing: Baby Clara

This is just a brief introduction to my cousin’s sweet new baby. We’ll do a full shoot next week, but she is just too precious not to share. Best part? This first picture was actually taken by Addison. The only way I could convince Addison we weren’t going to touch the brand new 3 day old baby was to give her a camera with an 85mm lens and let her take pictures with mom. I love to see her view of the world. Welcome to the family Baby Clara.

I have literally known this family since I was 13. I still remember seeing Carrie walk into Mrs. Gann’s homeroom class, the new transfer to our school, and just knowing we would be friends. Having never really struggled with shyness I invited her to sit next to me and the rest is pretty much history. A terrific history of a genuine, uncomplicated friendship that makes my heart grow two sizes. A recent move over the mountains has added a little glitch to our weekly visits, but really if your friendship can survive junior high, it can make it through anything.

B: Senior

I headed to a local park recently to spend some time with a pretty remarkable senior. Spunk, edge and a whole lot of take-life-by-storm. B there are many adventures ahead for you to explore and in the words of Dr. Seuss:

any direction you choose.
You’re on your own. And you know what you know.
And YOU are the girl who’ll decide where to go.

When you first meet someone, whether it be boy or girl, I truly believe that there is either chemistry or not. I’m not talking about the romantic movie moments here, but just a clicking and knowing that with an investment of time, you have discovered a friend. When I showed up to shoot Libby’s portrait session it took me all of about 5 seconds to realize that we could totally be friends. Oddly, we are very different, but for me it is that balance that is so refreshing. Too much of myself has potential to be quite bothersome in someone else. It was the quickest hour and I left feeling like I had spent my morning time investment in a very friendship profitable way. Not to mention the fact that she lives on a rockin house boat! I was having some adventure-lived envy. Thank you so much Libby for opening your home to me and sharing your sweet faced puppy.

Lucy: 3 months

Baby plans are so incredibly fun for a multitude of reasons. The best and most delightful is watching this tiny infant turn rather swiftly into their own little person with personality, character and a whole lot of love. Laugh, fly, dream, imagine but first you’ll have to crawl, walk and run. I can’t wait for the 6 month stop on Baby Lucy’s first year!

Lewis Family Photos: Snohomish

Family photos always hold so much mystery. The mystery lies in the many unknowns that are guidable, but pretty much uncontrollable. And they are usually under the age of 6. Having been the parent in such a scenario I am fully aware of the panic, frustration and anxiety that leads very quickly and unfortunately to crazy angry mom. Never a proud moment for me. The true miracle is that when photographing other families I enjoy and revel in the antics of children. Let kids be kids and I’ll chase them around, crawl on the ground and pretty much have a wonderful time while capturing their smiles, games and hopefully a little piece of who they are right now. I hope to put that nugget of wisdom in my pocket and pull it out when I’m trying to get updated photos of my kids. Here’s to keeping crazy angry mom under wraps.

Thank you Lewis family for enjoying a pretty much perfect fall day in downtown Snohomish. The pleasure was mine and I look forward to seeing your family again soon!

LIttle A had her own idea of what we should be doing for photos. These next two are probably my favorites. I know they are not anywhere near the ‘perfect’ family portrait but you can’t tell me they are telling a much more real life, detailed story. The age of independence, fun & play does not want to sit still for pictures. They want to fly, run or just explore where the path takes them. Seriously, the look on Dad’s face is priceless. The beautiful imperfect moments make me happy.

Who doesn’t like to throw leaves? I’m just jealous I can’t throw and shoot.

(The dogs will be our little secret.)

Ethan & Cynthia + Baby: Sneak peek

Since I know Cynthia is enjoying her baby shower today I thought I would give her a little sneak peek at her maternity shoot yesterday. More to come, but a small sampling is my gift as you celebrate the coming of your sweet baby boy. I had such a wonderfully fun time with the both of you and can hardly wait to meet you little man!

How lucky is this baby? Two parents who are already loving on him like crazy and giving him the gift of music. I could have sat and watched this family moment all day. Absolutely beautiful.

Baby Seeley: 10 days new

There is nothing much more life altering than a new baby in the mix. New baby plus a 19 month old and you’ve got yourself a plate full of fun with a side of happy but exhausted. Rylee, David & Nadia grew their family to four when baby Seeley was born back in September (you can see that arrival here.) Three years isn’t so long that I have forgotten what the first few days, let alone weeks, are like when you are regrouping and adjusting life around your new normal. Rylee is a champ and is pretty much setting the bench for mother’s everywhere. Don’t worry Nadia, I know the wait might feel long, but before you know it your playmate will be up to speed and chasing you around, pulling your hair and tormenting you in proper little brother fashion. Baby Seeley: Ready, set, grow.

I love this one. Nadia has clearly decided the invasion is completely Rylee’s fault.

Dooz: Headband lovin

I’m not sure what it is exactly, but throw two kids together who aren’t siblings for a photo shoot and all of a sudden it’s like working with paid models whose only desire is to make you happy. Super cooperative, excited to be helpful and loving every minute. The salon Dooz Salon in Bellevue asked if we would take some photos with some of their newly styled and available headbands to show off how very stylish, oh-so-cute and outfit accentuating they can be. Accessorize, accessorize, accessorize.

Bowie Tuesday: Family Portrait

I am a huge believer in the importance of family pictures, and this is not just because I’m in the business of taking them. It is pretty much priceless to forever own a moment in time of your family interacting, smiling, laughing and enjoying one another. It doesn’t have to be elaborate or take hours or be in some sort of fabulous setting. After all, the focus is the people and relationships. We had about 15 minutes left of light when we shot these. Literally. The sun had worked its way down the sky so far that we had to abandon our initial location and just pulled over at the first available field. It is basically a new neighborhood that has halted construction due to the economy. A quick dash out of the car, swift prayer that we didn’t run the kids too ragged all day so that they had a little smile left in them and here you go. I know that they are my kids and I’m coming to the table not just a small bit biased, but seriously, they are so darn cute and I am profoundly glad to have a piece of this summer day to hang on my wall.

I know this is the classic family portrait and I’m glad we have it, but I have to say my favorites are the first two. Would love to know the secret that Addison had to share with Landon.
