At my high school most student government positions were a no contest victory. The school was very small and often you found yourself running unopposed. Voting day would come, and you would stand before your classmates knowing that no matter how bad your speech sucked, they had to vote for you because yours was the only name on the ballot. The year I ran for student body treasurer, I decided that even though there was no contest, I was going to give a good speech. I decided that people should know I would do a good job so that they would feel positive about checking the only box on the ballot. I walked to the microphone, speech in hand, one hundred pairs of eyes on me. I looked up, didn’t even glance at my fancy speech and gave the same lame speech everyone else gave – “I’m so-and-so, and I’m running for such-and-such, and I am running unopposed.” Well, today I find myself on voting day again – this time with no speech prepared, no literal eyes on me, and lots of competition.
