We Know How You Feel

We give advice to every mom who schedules a family session with us. We give good tips for what to wear, what to bring, how to keep the kids motivated to participate. Our moms usually come as prepared as possible, then the inevitable happens – their toddlers act like toddlers. Together we encounter tears, distraction, anger, giggles, wandering, running away, screaming their heads off, refusing to stand, sit, run, walk or whatever it is we ask them to do. The mom shoots furtive glances our way as they try and wrestle their two year old into a new shirt, hoping that we aren’t judging their kid or their parenting. Before you moms all start feeling bad about your session, let me tell you about the last time my family had our portraits taken.

Nadia was done participating about 10 seconds into the session. We busted out every trick we had. I let her bring her favorite beads and bracelets, knowing they would be in every photo. I gave her a special treat – a juice box, which also ended up in every photo. Once you give it, you can’t take it away. Kelly was balancing gummy bears on the camera to get Nadia to head her way instead of running off on her own adventure. To top it all off, I was standing in the grass adjusting my too-small pants and they exploded from the waist band down through the crotch and about half way down the thigh. I might as well have not worn pants with the amount of exposure I was getting after that rip. Being the relaxed person that I am, I decided to continue the session, using Nadia to hide the fact that my panties were showing. So how long do you think it took for us to all get a bit grumpy, run out of snacks, be too hot, done participating, and have a major wardrobe malfunction? 15 minutes. Makes an hour long session seem like a long time, huh. Despite all the craziness, we still managed to squeeze out a few good ones. All this to say, next time your toddler is acting out or you are running out of patience, skip the apologies and know that we completely understand.

Ayesha & Sara: Portraits at Kirkland Heritage Hall

There is something about a mother and daughter session that warms my heart. Maybe it’s the cute coordinating outfits. Perhaps the mom talk about raising a little girl. It could be the fact that the ace in our pocket is a tube of lip gloss that brings out the happiest smile. Whatever it is, I wasn’t disappointed when I photographed these two beautiful girls.

This is my favorite image from the session. I love that Ayesha is looking fabulously happy, and Sara is totally absorbed in necklace sucking fun.

This is Sara’s lip gloss induced smile. She’s a girl through and through.

Photographing toddlers is one of the most challenging jobs in the world. You have to be at once creative, athletic, humorous, and musical. It was my rousing rendition of If You’re Happy and You Know It that got us started on our photographic adventure – it’s amazing how having children kills your inhibitions about singing in public.

It’s hard to be one.

Meet the Manegos! Lauren has great style – her furniture is mostly vintage and super gorgeous. I spent some of the time just thinking about the amazing carved mahogany side board, but I was their to photograph the family, so no furniture showcase.

Preschoolers & Beach: Adventures at Kayak Point

This post is a little overdue since preschool graduation has come and gone (only last week) and Landon is now Kindergarten bound. However, we enjoyed a wonderful year and one of the year end activities was a picnic day at Kayak Point. We make frequent trips to Kayak, but as is true with most activities, it is simply way more fun with friends. In light of such a grand event, the sun came out in full force and the kids were swimming, splashing and exploring for hours. I planned rather poorly clothing wise so you’ll notice Addison doing some wardrobe changes throughout the day thanks to a much better prepared and generous friend. It would be lovely if every trip to the beach could be shared with so many friends to play, but since that just isn’t possible, it certainly does make days like this that much more memorable.

A very little jellyfish. They were all over the place. I’ve had some bad run-in’s with jellyfish, but apparently the part to fear is their tentacles. There is much to learn from Disney classics like Nemo. It was all well and good for Dori until she touched the tentacles.

In case it isn’t obvious by the looks of sheer joy of the kids frolicking in the water, the sound is pretty much 2 degrees from freezing the entire year. Temperatures would have to be near melting for me to even consider what these dare devils didn’t think twice about doing.

Too much adventuring and exploring for one beachcomber. Grady, you’re looking awfully sweet and cozy, even though I know you’re completely soaked and covered in sand. That’ s a mother’s love for sure.
